Pronoia is the Antidote for Paranoia: How the Whole World is Conspiring to Shower You with Blessings by Rob Brezsny is a book that I gladly turn to in both joyous moments as well as crazy, horrible times like what transpired in Washington D.C. last week. This book is a gem whenever we need to catch our collective breath and pause to gather strength in fighting the good fight and renewing our focus on becoming a maestro of “rowdy bliss”, as Brezsny likes to say.
Brezsny’s writing helps re-gather a focus on beauty and truth, even in the midst of being witness to a Wannabe Tinpot Dictator extolling the virtues of America’s “freedom” while abdicating responsibility for preserving the hard-fought democracy foundations needed to keep “equal justice under law” moving forward and shining Liberty’s light, albeit imperfectly. Brezsny’s optimism doesn’t shy away from acknowledging the horrible and tragic in the world. His work is more thoughtful and intelligent and eye-twinkling-good-mischief-kinda-gonzo than that. I adore his unique way of reminding us how much more we have going for us even during challenging times, and it helps me re-ground. I needed it today. Here’s a quick excerpt from the book:

I’ve seen Brezsny’s newspaper column, but haven’t read his book. Staying focused on life’s many small daily miracles is indeed very good advice.
Stacey Abrams is a fantastic organizer. I would’ve liked to see her as Biden’s attorney general, but I’m guessing she was not interested because she probably wants to run for governor again. Merrick Garland is a good pick to restore integrity to the DOJ because he brings a judge’s impartial mindset. Biden and all his appointees have a tough job ahead of them, shoveling up after the elephants. I am thankful for honorable public servants and will never take their existence for granted again.

Thank you for your wonderful note here—and I agree wholeheartedly about Stacey and everything you mentioned. Beautifully said. The “shoveling up” (great metaphor!) will indeed take dedication from us all, and yes … so deeply grateful for the honorable public servants that have been holding fast to the safety pins holding the nation’s foundations together ‘til it can be well stitched up. So cool that you’ve seen Brezsny’s wise and wild newspaper column. I look forward to the weekly email of that column and was pleased to see he’s started a Patreon account recently too. His book is like a multi-faceted mandala of those small daily miracles you mentioned and reminds me of the inspiring “Nurturing Thursdays” feature on your marvelous blog.
